On April 15, 2021, the Department of Geodesy and Cartography of the Faculty of Architecture and Construction of the L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University hosted a scientific seminar on "Teaching cartography as part of a GIS course", attended by faculty, undergraduates and students.
The speaker was Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor of the department Ishankulov Marat Shaidulovich. In his report, Marat Shaidulovich said that in modern society, information technologies penetrate into various spheres of human activity, playing an increasingly important role in human life. This trend is most pronounced in the field of education. To be in demand in the labor market, future specialists must have a sufficient amount of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the field of information technology. The use of a personal computer, the ability to work with a variety of software is the main criterion for the employer when choosing a specialist.
On the one hand, GIS made the process of creating maps accessible to the mass user, but on the other hand, it made it possible to create a low-quality map. Without knowledge of the basics of cartography, the correct interpretation of the GIS analysis by the map user became impossible. After all, adequate interpretation and representation of spatial data requires cartographic skills.
Questions on the topic of the seminar were discussed, teachers, undergraduates and students asked questions.
The scientific seminar was aimed at attracting students ' interest in studying and improving their skills in GIS.
The seminar was held online from 14.00-15.00 on the Microsoft Teams platform at the link: https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a10feee48c29f4b79adeeda48d10c86b7%40thread.tacv2/1617613236547?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%225a2fd781-9261-485a-af2b-6171d0efab73%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22ce047876-e10d-4b61-872c-8aee3ca17357%22%7d
